Active Ingredient present in Evalon Vaginal cream

The active ingredient present in Evalon Vaginal cream is Estradiol. Each gram Evalon Vaginal cream contains 1 mg of Estradiol.

Uses Of Estradiol Vaginal Cream

Estradiol Vaginal Cream is used in the treatment of Atrophic Vaginitis and Kraurosis Vulvae and treatment of Moderate to Severe Dyspareunia, a Symptom of Vulvar and Vaginal Atrophy, due to Menopause.

This medicine is also used to treat vaginal problems caused by having too little oestrogen and before or after vaginal surgery to help wound healing.

How Does Estradiol Vaginal Cream Work?

Estriol, Oestriol, or Estradiol the active ingredient present in Evalon Vaginal Cream is one of the natural oestrogens.Oestrogens are female sex hormones which are are produced in the ovaries and cause sexual development in women and control the menstrual cycle during the child-bearing years.

When women get older the ovaries gradually produce less oestrogen and this usually happens around the age of 50 when the menopause sets in. In case the ovaries are removed before the menopause, oestrogen production stops very suddenly and shortage of oestrogens may cause the vaginal wall to become thin and dry.

Hence sexual intercourse can become painful and you may get vaginal infections. These problems can be prevented by using medicines like Evalon Vaginal Cream which contain oestrogen. It may take several days or weeks before you notice an improvement in the patients condition.

Estradiol Vaginal Cream - Dosage and Administration

The initial dose of Estradiol Vaginal Cream is 2 to 4 grams intravaginally per day for 1 to 2 weeks.
The maintenance dose is 1 gram intravaginally 1 to 3 times a week.

Serious adverse effects have not been reported following acute ingestion of large doses of estrogen-containing medicines like Estradiol Vaginal cream by young children.

The common side effects of Estradiol Vaginal Cream (Evalon Vaginal cream) include Breast pain or tenderness; headache; hair loss; mild nausea or vomiting; spotting or breakthrough bleeding; stomach cramps or bloating. Check with your doctor if any of the above most common side effects persist or become bothersome. Other side effects include:

• Irritation or itching of the skin in or around your vagina when you start to use Ovestin. This usually gets better after a few weeks.

Evalon Vaginal cream Contraindications

Evalon Vaginal cream should not be used in the presence of the following situations listed below:
 

• Hypersensitivity to Estradiol or to any of the inactive ingredients present in Evalon Vaginal cream
• Undiagnosed abnormal genital bleeding.
• Known or suspected pregnancy.
• Known, suspected, or history of cancer of the breast.
• Known or suspected estrogen-dependent neoplasia.
• Active deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism or history of these conditions.
• Active or recent (within the past year) arterial thromboembolic disease (for example, stroke, myocardial infarction).
• Liver dysfunction or disease.

Interactions of Estradiol Vaginal Cream with Other Drugs

The interactions of Estradiol Vaginal Cream with other medicines is given below:

Inducers of Cytochrome P450 3A4 enzyme such as St. John’s Wort preparations (Hypericum perforatum), Phenobarbital, Carbamazepine, And Rifampin can reduce plasma concentrations of estrogens, possibly resulting in a decrease in therapeutic effects and/or changes in the uterine bleeding profile.

Inhibitors of CYP3A4 such as Erythromycin, Clarithromycin, Ketoconazole, Itraconazole, Ritonavir and grapefruit juice may increase plasma concentrations of Estrogens and may result in side effects.

Warnings and Precautions while Using Estradiol Vaginal Cream

The following precautions must be noted when using Estradiol Vaginal Cream ( Evalon Vaginal cream ):

• Undiagnosed abnormal genital bleeding.
• Known, suspected, or history of cancer of the breast.
• Known or suspected estrogen-dependent neoplasia.
• Active deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism or history of these conditions.
• Active or recent (within the past year) arterial thromboembolic disease (for example, stroke, myocardial infarction).
• Liver dysfunction or disease.
• Evalon (Estradiol Vaginal cream, USP, 1%) should not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to its ingredients.
• Known or suspected pregnancy.

Estradiol Vaginal Cream During Pregnancy

Estradiol Vaginal Cream has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category X. Studies conducted in animals or humans have demonstrated fetal abnormalities and/or there is positive evidence of human fetal risk based on adverse reaction data from investigational or marketing experience, and the risks involved in use of this medicine in pregnant women clearly outweigh potential benefits.

Animal studies have demonstrated that high doses of estrogens have produced urogenital malformations in the offspring. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women.

Use of Estradiol Vaginal Cream is contraindicated during pregnancy. In case pregnancy occurs while this medicine is being used, treatment should be stopped immediately.

Nursing Considerations

Estradiol Vaginal Cream must not be used by Nursing women. This medicine is known to be excreted into human milk and detectable amounts of estrogens have been identified in the milk of mothers receiving this medication.

Use of Estrogen in nursing women has been shown to affect the quantity and quality of the breast milk.
