Clinical Pharmacology – How does Ovral L Contraceptive Pill work?

In normal women, there exists a feedback loop of hormones acting at various levels of the human body. LH and FSH are two hormones made in the brain that act on the ovary and uterus (womb). FSH progressively thickens and prepares the lining of the womb for receiving a pregnant egg or zygote while LH promotes bursting of the ovary in mid cycle to release the egg for fertilization.
When synthetic estrogen - progestin combinations are exogenously administered as with taking an oral contraceptive pill like Ovral L, these flood the blood stream and block the release of gonadotrophic hormones FSH and LH, which in turn prevents ovulation.
